Connoisseurs of craftsmanship, devotees of design, appreciators of art, and woodworking enthusiasts of all stripes are invited to the opening celebration for "Current Student Work" at the Messler Gallery on Friday, March 23, 2007 from 5-7 pm. The exhibition features original furniture and furnishings created by students who will be graduating from the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship's Nine-month Comprehensive this Spring. The aesthetic range of the work on display reflects the diverse backgrounds of the 14 students, who arrived in September to immerse themselves in the art of furniture making. They hail from as far away as Snohomish, Washington and as near as Machias, Maine and vary in age from twenty-one to fifty.
Their previous occupations include cabinetmaking, mortgage loan recovery, timber framing, x-ray repair, international sales and marketing, editor, heavy equipment repair, architectural drawing, and finish carpentry, plus there are a couple of recent college graduates. What these students have in common is the desire to establish fulfilling careers in the art of furniture making. Under the leadership of instructor David Upfill-Brown and a host of local, national and international visiting instructors, the class has produced an impressive collection of original work.

The students' one-of-a-kind designs will be on display in the Gallery through April 20, 2007, and many will be offered for sale. Gallery hours are 9-5 Monday through Friday and 10-4 on Saturdays. The gallery will be closed from March 28 - April 2, when the students will be exhibiting their work at the CraftBoston show, sponsored by the Society of Arts and Crafts.

The exhibition can also be viewed on the Center's Web site: www.woodschool.org. The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship is a nonprofit school that offers courses in furniture making and related arts such as carving and woodturning.

The purpose of the Messler Gallery is, first and foremost, educational. It provides opportunities for students and the public to view work by faculty and other professional furniture makers firsthand; it serves as a venue for public lectures by faculty and visiting artists; and it offers exhibition experience to students, through display of their own work. In addition, as the only venue in Maine dedicated to the year-round exhibition of handcrafted furniture and fine woodworking, the Messler Gallery provides much-needed exposure for regional furniture makers. The Messler Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9-5 and Saturday from 10-4.
