Turner Specializes in
Rustic Lamps

One of our readers wrote to tell us about taking lessons from "a wonderful instructor, Ed Szakonyi, in Roselle, Illinois. Ed has been turning for over 40 years, since junior high". Ed teaches evening classes for 3 or 4 people at a time, in addition to his daytime turning business. He makes "woodsy" type lamps and turns special assignments for local stairbuilders and others. Kept as close as possible to their natural form, his lamps "showcase the beauty of the forest.... perfect for the log or country home and a welcome hint of the outdoors in even the most modern rooms." His lamps are available with a natural linen, kraft or pine cone shade and include a matching finial.

New Turning Book from Australian Author

"Turned Chessmen" is the fifth book in Mike Darlow's series on woodturning, and the first of his project books. It describes the history of chess and turned chessmen, how to analyze the designs of existing chess sets, how to design new sets, and how to turn and carve chessmen.
Born in Birmingham, England, in 1943, Mike trained as a civil engineer. He emigrated to Australia in 1969 and in 1974 began his woodworking education. In 1979, after completing woodturning and cabinetmaking courses, he became a professional woodturner.

The breadth and depth of his woodturning experience and his training as an engineer are reflected in the wealth of detail and practical discussion in his magazine articles, books, and DVD.
