Nora Hall classes now on DVD
Tradition and technology keep bumping into each other, and the latest publication from master carver Nora Hall is no exception. A superb teacher and craftsperson, Ms. Hall's celebrated woodcarving series is now being transferred to DVD. The first disk, "The Basics of European Woodcarving", is already available through her Web site (see address below), and also through venues like Woodcraft stores nationwide. The video has been re-edited for digital clarity, and now includes subtitles. Additional DVD lessons are in the works and will be available very soon.

In addition to the DVDs, Ms. Hall continues to teach in person. Her upcoming schedule includes classes at the Rockler store in Denver from April 22-25, and the Woburn (Mass.) Woodcraft store from May 14-15. On May 19 she will be at the McLaughlin Woods School in Canterbury, NH.

Presentation Canes for Young Vets
The March/April issue of Chipchats arrived in our office this week and one of the stories really caught my eye. Starting on page 52 is a piece about the folks in the Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association who have made it their mission to create canes for young veterans. Their Presentation Canes are made for post 911 soldiers who have been injured in Afghanistan and Iraq and who suffer from significant foot, leg or hip injuries that are the result of combat-related trauma.

Shown above are the heads of some of the Presentation Canes. The magazine has published full-size plans in the current issue and if you're interested in exploring the idea of having your club make canes for vets in your part of the country, or in doing this as an individual, you might want to give Jack Nitz a call at 918-299-2251 or send him an e-mail and ask him to fill you in on how his club does things.

If you're not a member of the National Wood Carvers Association, you don't get Chipchats magazine. Being a member is incredibly affordable and the magazine is a wonderful source of news, ideas, supply sources, contacts and great feature articles.
