A Deep Bowl Buffer and
A 2" Mandrel

The Beall Tool Company has two new products that should interest turners and anyone else who does buffing, too. The buffing mandrel extension (top photo) screws into their 3-3/4" buffing adaptor to provide an overall reach of 6-3/4" for buffing inside deep bowls or vessels. It works with any of the Beall Buffs which have center bolts. The company also has a new Treen Mandrel Expander (lower photo), which is an expansion kit for their 1-1/4" Treen Mandrel Set that allows the turning of 2" ID boxes. It consists of two 2" diameter steel rings which slide over the original mandrel (where they are secured with set screws,) and a 2" aluminum gauge ring to aid in matching box and lid diameters.

Students' Furniture Exhibition
Maine's Center for Furniture Craftsmanship opened a new exhibition of student work on March 11 this year. Included are works in fine furniture which were created by students in the Center's current 9-month comprehensive course. The event takes place on campus in the school's own Messler Gallery. The designs on display are as diverse as the geographical and professional backgrounds of the thirteen emerging woodworkers who are enrolled in the course.
"Visitors to the school are always curious to see student pieces, but mostly (they just) see work in progress," says Senior Administrator, Kate Fletcher. "This show offers a view of some remarkable completed pieces, ranging from cabinets to clocks, traditional tables, and contemporary wall mirrors."

All of the participants in this year's Comprehensive (September 04 through June 05) have come to Rockport with the common goal of pursuing careers as studio furniture makers. They complete eight projects over the 36-week period.

"The 9-month Comprehensive program provides the hands-on training students need to design and build beautiful, expressive furniture, including an awareness of the business aspects of becoming a successful craftsman," says the school's director, Peter Korn. Mounting this exhibition is part of the professional development training the students are receiving while in Rockport. They also visit woodworking shops and studios around the state and meet with gallery owners to learn what it takes to run a successful business.

Located at 25 Mill Street in Rockport, the Center is a non-profit school offering courses in furniture making and related arts such as carving and woodturning.

They also tops panel rattling, and help eliminate cracking glue joints. Space Balls are 0.26" diameter, designed to fit standard stile and rail cutters, and you need 8-10 per door. 3/16" Balls are now available, and the company will send you a free sample of either size to try.
