What can you make from a single 2x4

String instrument making and repair.

Lake Charles Woodworkers share a special event.

The 2X4 Challenge!
Bob Bedier of Vancouver, Canada...
Each spring, members of the Pacific Woodworkers Guild put their ingenuity, creativity and skill to the test in response to the following challenge: What can you make from a single 2x4, 8 feet in length?
The answer might surprise you. Entrants, based-upon their skill level, are classified into one of three skill levels: novice, intermediate and expert. Each entry begins from a single 8 foot 2x4, any species. Additional materials are permitted, depending upon the category of the entry, as described in the rules.
Interested in participating? The Challenge is open to all members of the Pacific Woodworkers Guild or a member of another amateur woodworking club within the Province of British Columbia or the State of Washington.
The Pacific Woodworkers Guild has been running the 2x4 Challenge for over ten-years. Here are the winners from 2003...

Yes, all three of Harry Taylor's Clock Towers came from a single 2x4! He was the winner in the Expert Category and he also took Most Original Winner and Best Use Of 2x4.
The 2004 winners will be announced about the time this issue of woodezine goes to press. You can check on the results by clicking here. [http://members.shaw.ca/pwwg/home.htm]

The Guild of American Luthiers
This is a non-profit educational membership organization, formed in 1972 to advance the craft of string instrument making and repair (lutherie), through a free exchange of information.
The Guild is an open, friendly organization made up of folks from all over the US, Canada and over 30 different countries worldwide who are builders and repairers of all types of string musical instruments, professionals and hobbyists, as well as folk who are just interested in the art of lutherie.
