When the nonprofit Center For Furniture Craftsmanship
in Rockport, Maine kicks off its 13th year of woodworking courses next
month (June), it will be in spacious new facilities funded by a successful
$2.4 million capital campaign. Expanded programs for novice, intermediate,
advanced, and professional woodworkers include Workshops, Twelve-week
Intensives, a Nine-month Comprehensive, a Studio Fellowship Program,
and exhibitions in the Messler Gallery.
The Center's curriculum encourages individual excellence
in furniture making, design, and related skills such as turning, carving,
marquetry and finishing. The school has an international teaching staff
of more than 40 professional woodworkers. Students have round-the-clock
shop access, with class sizes generally limited to twelve students served
by two full-time instructors. Facilities include three fully independent
workshop buildings, a turning studio, a library and a gallery on an
11-acre campus.
