Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation's V28 lithium ion cordless power tools add no extra battery weight, yet deliver increased power and up to twice the run time of traditional 18 volt products. In addition, V28 technology continues to deliver its high performance in a wider temperature range than Ni-Cd, operating in hot or cold environments. The V28 battery is more eco-friendly than most other high powered rechargeable batteries because it contains no cadmium, and therefore does not have to be recycled in many states. (Milwaukee still encourages the recycling of all rechargeable battery packs.) For more info, visit www.v28power.com |

Universal Laser Systems, Inc. has a new 10-watt desktop laser called the VersaLaser that can burn images or drawings from your computer screen onto wood, plastic, fabric, paper, glass, leather, stone, ceramic and rubber. It also can etch hard materials like glass, ceramic and even metal. The VersaLaser has a 16"x12" table size, runs on numerous standard Windows based software programs and has a short learning curve for new users. It is particularly useful because of its low initial investment and upgradeability to 25 or 30 watts at a later date. At only $7,995, the VersaLaser 10-watt also is an inexpensive alternative for architectural firms who outsource model-making and prototyping. |

Television's David Marks is a remarkable teacher, but he's also a superb craftsman, as is evidenced by his Scarab Chair shown at left. The technique used to create the dramatic arms and legs of this piece, bentwood lamination, is the subject of a workshop David will give this summer at his California studio. (This is not a class on chair building.) The class is for beginning to intermediate woodworkers, and each student can expect to take home a completed sample of a bentwood lamination project. In this hands-on class, each student will design his or her own curve, as well as design and build their own bending form. Students will learn how to resaw laminates on the bandsaw. In addition, David will demonstrate how to do compound bentwood laminations as well as continuous strip laminations. As a special feature of this class, one day lunch will be in the Sculpture Garden of Paradise Ridge Winery, the location of an outdoor bentwood lamination sculpture by David, made of Brazilian ipe and redwood burl. Dates are August 12-14 and the $500 course fee includes all materials. |
