  Peters Valley is located within the scenic Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, along the Delaware River. The campus is in the northwest corner of New Jersey, where New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania meet. The campus (shown at left) is in a rural setting with a wooded landscape just 2-1/2 hours north of Philadelphia and only 60 miles northwest of New York City.

2005 Woodworking Workshops

Spontaneous Structures
Jason Detwiler
June 3-5 (3 day)
This workshop will explore the "create as you go" method of design. We will give new life to found objects and in the process we will use old and new joinery techniques. Each student will bring some of their own found objects and leave with a new piece of furniture. We'll bend some rules and break with tradition.
Intermediate.
Jason Detwiler received his BFA from Kutztown University. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions including the Allentown Art Museum, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, the Wharton Esherick Museum, and the Doshi Center for Contemporary Crafts.

The Table - An Elevated Twig Surface
Clifton Montieth
June 10-14 (5 day)
Using the simplest tools and elemental green wood saplings fresh from Mother Nature, this workshop will explore the construction possibilities and design principles involved in producing functional and inspiring small tables.
Beginner to advanced.
Clifton Monteith is an internationally known furniture maker who draws inspiration for his work from the use of natural materials in their most elemental form. He has taught workshops and lectured throughout the U.S. as well as in England and Japan. His work has received numerous grants from such organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts, the US-Japan Friendship Commission and the Japan Foundation among others.

Steam Bending
Danny Birnbaum
June 17-19 (3 day)
Be prepared to tie wood in knots and bend massive timbers using traditional steam bending techniques. In this class we will break down the myths of steam bending wood and learn the ways of using this forgotten technique.
Intermediate to advanced.
Danny Birnbaum received his BFA from the School for American Crafts at RIT and his MFA from the University of Wisconsin in furniture design. He owns and operates a custom furniture shop in New Jersey.

Chainsaw Carving
Walter Sansone
June 24-25 (2 day)
Ever wondered how someone can carve an enormous log without losing a limb of their own? Walter Sansone, master chainsaw carver, will demonstrate techniques and tools for creating his unique sculptures. He will cover layout, design, massive stock removal with the chainsaw, and then the refining of the form with the grinder and chisel. If you've ever considered trying this yourself, Walter's workshop is a must. (Demonstration only.)
Intermediate to advanced.
Walter Sansone is experienced in allthe materials of sculpture. He usually works in stone, wood or metal. For the past four years he has been doing large-scale woodcarving and concentrating on building a foundry at his gallery in Branchville, NJ.

Furniture Making 101
Mark C. Wilkins
July 1-3 (3-day)
Students will learn how to build a small end table. Stock preparation, using the table saw, jointer, and planer will be covered. Students will learn how to mortise and tenon legs and rails, as well as glue up a table top. If time permits, the basics of finishing also will be covered. Each student will leave with an assembled end table ready for final sanding and finishing. Some knowledge of woodworking would be helpful.
Beginner to intermediate.
Mark C. Wilkins, a former woodworking department head at Peters Valley, is an independent curator/woodworker living on Cape Cod. He is currently working at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum curating its first exhibit and building a replica of a wooden catboat. He also is curating an exhibit on Studio Furniture at the Cape Cod Museum of Fine Arts for summer 2005. A 1999 NJ State Council on the Arts Grant recipient, Mark also has spent four years at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art, where he did everything from cabinetmaking to exhibition design/curatorial work.

Sharper Than a Tack

July 8-9 (2 day)
This workshop is for those who want to know what they really mean when they say "sharp". We will cover the equipment and the process for sharpening your paring chisels, plane irons and carving tools. When we're through, cutting wood will never be the same.
Beginner.
Stephan Goetschius is the woodworking department head at Peters Valley. He received his BFA from Murray State University and has worked at various artist communities around the country including Penland, Arrowmont, and Anderson Ranch. His work is exhibited nationally.

Practical Joinery
with the Table Saw and Router

Bill Hylton
July 15-17 (3 day)
Let's face it. Power tools are practical. With them, you can cut a variety of strong, tightly fitted joints in short order. This workshop focuses on practical joinery, cut with commonplace power tools: the table saw and the router. You'll learn how to select a joint that's appropriate for your application, several ways to cut it, and how to assemble it. Specific joints covered include dadoes and grooves, rabbets, sliding dovetails, mortises and tenons, laps and half-laps. You'll leave the workshop with some hands-on experience and a jig or two that will make it easier for you to cut accurate, properly fitted joints for your next project.
Beginner to intermediate.
Bill Hylton is the author of a half-dozen woodworking books, including Woodworking with the Router, Router Magic and Chests of Drawers. His latest book, Power Tool Joinery, will be published in the summer of 2005. He has been practicing and writing about woodworking for more than 25 years.

5 Days to Furniture
Brent Skidmore
July 22-26 (5 day)
Spend five days getting a real introduction to the woodshop and wood as a medium. This is the second time this class has been offered at PV and in 2002 it proved to be an unbelievable experience for all. Students will be encouraged to work on a small table, lamp, stool, clock, etc. to be mostly completed during our 5 days together. Brent will present demonstrations on safety, machine use, basic mortise and tenon joinery, material prep, and some design. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to participate as it is a class designed for beginners in the woodshop.
Beginner.
Brent Skidmore has been teaching in many capacities for 15 years and has shown his work extensively across the nation. Most recent shows include the Smithsonian Craft Show and SOFA-Chicago. After being out on his own running Brent Skidmore Studio for six years, he has recently returned to teaching at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he teaches Woodworking and Functional Art and 3-D design. Brent's background is a BFA and MFA in sculpture so this always means a less than traditional approach to woodworking and wood as a medium.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Learn how glass and wood combine as you design and build an original wall-hung mirror. Flex your creative muscles while learning about glass cutting, wood joinery, carving, shaping and much more. Explore techniques new to you such as inlay or bent lamination. You'll come to see how the sky is the limit and if it reflects, it must be good. Beginners through advanced woodworkers are invited to expand your horizons in this energized 5-day class.

Ken Burton has been working with wood professionally for more than 22 years. He holds an MFA from the School for American Crafts at RIT. Currently, Mr. Burton operates Windy Ridge Woodworks in New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, where he designs and builds studio furniture, custom cabinetry and interiors.

Big Bowls & Experimental Surfaces
Travis Townsend
August 5-9 (5 day)
Students will learn how to build large expressive bowl forms from plywood and many approaches to surfacing wood using paint and mixed media. This workshop will be a hands-on adventure in container making through daily demonstrations, slide talks and individual experimentation. It will be a bowl of fun.

Travis Townsend received his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and BFA from Kutztown University. His awards include a residency at Penland, an Emerging Artist Grant from the American Craft Council, a grant to participate in the Emma Lake Collaboration, and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council.

Marketing and Pricing Your Woodworking

August 13 (1 day)
The Woodworker's Dilemma: How do you get more business? How much should you charge? Are your estimates too high? Or more likely... too low? How do you determine your hourly rate? What types of marketing strategies might best represent your work? Should you advertise or rely on word of mouth? All of these issues will be addressed in this one day session.
Jim Whitman has been busy over the last forty years illustrating, designing, woodworking and carving. After retiring from his graphic design studio two years ago, he has been busy with woodworking commissions at this studio in Lafayette, NJ. He recently delivered a large carving assignment for the Marco Island Spa in Florida and is looking forward to a prototype assignment for a hotel in Tokyo. Jim served on the Peters Valley Board of Directors for over 20 years and has been involved in many workshops with some of the world's top woodworkers while at the Valley.

Wood Sculpture
Thaddeus Mosely
August 19-23 (5 day)
Students of all levels will create sculpture from logs. The sculptures may be abstract, realistic, or utilitarian depending on the focus of the student. This is truly hands-on as no power tools are allowed. The mallet and the chisel are your only friends.
Beginner to advanced.
Thaddeus Mosely has been a sculptor for nearly 50 years. He has taught art workshops for York University, Memphis College of Art, The Philadelphia Museum as well as at PSH Center for Crafts, the Society of Contemporary Crafts and Touchstone Center for Crafts. Thaddeus has been the recipient of numerous awards including the 1999 PA Artist of the Year. His work is shown nationally including a solo exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and the Spoleto Festival in Charleston.

The Lidded Box
Stephen Proctor
August 26-31 (6 day)
Students will design their own boxes, considering the interiors, exteriors, and mechanics. Conventional and innovative construction techniques will be encouraged using both hand and machine tools. Lid location, hinges, and the setting of hinges will be covered in depth. We hope to close the class with successful openings!
Intermediate to advanced.
Stephen Proctor was trained in England as a furniture designer. He worked for Wendell Castle as foreman and as Dean of the Wendell Castle School from 1975-1988. He currently lives in Dallas, Texas and does commissions, speculative work, and teaches workshops around the country.

Marine Carving for Beginners

September 2-4 (3 day)
Carve a trail board, name board, an eagle's head or a billet head for your boat. This beginner's class will teach sharpening your tools, wood grain direction and other basics to make your start in wood carving an enjoyable one. In three days you'll bring home a carving to put on your boat or hang on your wall. Patterns will be supplied or bring your own design.
