Two New Woodturning Chucks
This summer KMS Tools & Equipment Ltd will be introducing two new woodturning chucks from Teknatool International, the makers of the well known Nova, Supernova, and Titan family of chucks. The new Supernova 2 (top photo) is a significant upgrade for the popular Supernova chuck. The pivot action handle and mechanism of the original Supernova has been replaced with a captured pinion, flush with the surface of the chuck and now operated with a ball-nose Allen key with a large plastic grip handle. The new key seats easier and faster than the older style key. The action itself is also faster, resulting in a very user-friendly chuck. The chuck back is sealed with a heavy-duty composite indexing backing plate, which will keep chips out of the mechanism. It is fully compatible with all the Nova jaw sets from the original Nova chuck, Supernova, and Titan (with the exception of the new 3-screw hole Titan jaws). The chuck will be available with either the traditional 2" jaws and woodworm screw, or the new 3" HD bowl jaws and woodworm screw.

The new Midi chuck (bottom photo) replaces both the Compac and the original Nova chuck. This chuck also uses the standard Nova jaws, and comes with a set of 2" jaws and a woodworm screw. Slightly smaller than the original Nova (3.5" overall diameter), the chuck has an overhang of only 60mm, making it ideal for lathes with smaller spindles. Rated for bowls up to 12" in diameter and 3"-4" thick, this appears to be an excellent entry-level chuck at a very reasonable price. Both these chucks will be available in early to mid July.
