David Marks' Teaching Schedule
|
|
Turned Wood Vessel |
On August 27 and 28, David will lead
a two-day hands-on class in Gilding & Chemical Patination. Students
will make six 4" x 10" sample boards, one of which will be gold leafed
and the rest will be gilded in copper, silver or Dutch metal. On the
first day, students will work with the traditional oil size method,
learning how to gild. Students will also explore creative gilding techniques
such as the Japanese Notan method of creating negative spaces. On the
second day, David will introduce students to the process of chemical
patination (coloring items to create decorative effects). He will demonstrate
safe ways of working with various mild acids to create an infinite array
of finishes which can be applied to most materials.

Freud Introduces New Carbide
|
Freud America, Inc., a leader in the production of high
quality woodworking carbide for over 50 years, tells us that they have
"revolutionized carbide production yet again by introducing TiCoŠ
Hi-Density Carbide, a new specially formulated Titanium Cobalt Carbide
designed to maximize performance on all of their bits and blades".
According to the company, the new carbide is much smaller and more densely
packed than other carbides on the market today, enabling the carbide
teeth on Freud's blades, bits and cutters to last up to four times longer
than standard products. Since the grains are much smaller, there is
not as dramatic a loss to the cutting edge, so wear occurs much more
slowly. Large grain carbides cannot be sharpened to such tight tolerances
and as a result leave a rougher finish. Plus, the cutting edge wears
much more quickly due to larger pieces of material eroding away with
use. For more info, contact Freud through their Web site. |
