Turning 2005
The Ohio Valley Woodturners' Guild will host Turning 2005 on October 21-23 this year. The symposium will be held at The Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center in West Harrison, Indiana, which is located on the Ohio/Indiana border about 30 minutes from Cincinnati. This is the Guild's fourth biennial symposium and the line-up of demonstrations and seminars is very impressive.

Topics include Surface treatment and texturing; Hollowing; Boxes, boxes, and more boxes; Tool sharpening; Spindle turning; Carving; Production turning and Multi-axis turning. The featured demonstrators include Jimmy Clewes from England who will demo thin, end-grain vessels and dyed-rim platters; J. Paul Fennell from Arizona with hollow forms, surface texture and carving, use of fiber optics, and tools; John Jordan from Tennessee with bowls from green wood and surface carving; Ray Key from England with boxes, bowls, platters and end-grain vessels; Richard Raffan from Australia with boxes and bowls; Chris Ramsey from Kentucky (The "Kentucky Hat Man"); and Chris Stott from England with boxes and eccentric turning. In addition to the featured demonstrators, there will be 24 rotations by guest turners from Ohio and surrounding states.

Philadelphia's Wood Turning Center is opening a new show called "Innovations" on July 1st. They are also upgrading their computer and inventory systems, so the Center will be closed to the public for a couple of weeks in August (from Monday, August 15th to Thursday, September 1st). The Center will re-open on Friday, September 2nd for a First Friday event. WTC is preparing for a major conference from September 21-24 called "Wood 2005", and also is working on the opening of three related exhibitions. All conference schedule details as well as how to register are posted online. The conference and related activities promise to be a major regional and national event for collectors, artists, and interested art connoisseurs.
