Turned Puzzles

John Berkeley is a professional turner in the UK who specializes in hand chasing screw threads. He also writes articles in The Woodturner magazine (UK), and is in the process of writing a book on the making of turned puzzles. John teaches and demonstrates turning and puzzle-making, and thinks he might be the only guy in the world who makes over thirty different screw threaded puzzles on a regular basis. He would be interested to hear from any like-minded turners.

You can visit John online (www.johnberkeley.co.uk) or send him an e-mail. (john@johnberkeley.co.uk)

HAPFO Lathe Video Clips

U.K. based Hapfo has introduced a series of downloadablevideo clips showing their lathes and duplicators in action. See how the 5000 CNC lathe uses a laser to read the profile of an existing spindle into the computer for an exact match. With the mega-Cad software, you can easily adjust the profile once it is loaded. Or watch the swiveling head which allows the cutting of an almost perfect wooden ball. Another clip shows their standard cutter and swivel head as it produces a tiny gallery peg in one pass, or you can watch an amazing rope twist being milled in just two passes. Among the other clips is one which demonstrates a wonderful barley twist being produced in just two passes.

New Zealand Turning Festival

The South Auckland Woodturners Guild (New Zealands largest guild) will host an annual festival the weekend of August 6 through the 8th. Called PARTICIPATION 2004, the event features woodturning for everyone - sharing, watching, learning, teaching, enjoying (limited to the first 60 paying participants). Bring a lathe for your own use and to share with others, and don't forget chucks, an extension lead and a light (and toys)! You may set up after 5 PM Friday. They would like to have 35 lathes. If you donŐt have a lathe, come and try the Tanner range and others that will arrive. Everyone bring your tools. Everyone bring some wood, or purchase some on-site from TreeWorkx or Vivian Indigenous Timbers. Also, the Tanner shop will be open. Bottomless tea & coffee all weekend. Saturday lunch (BBQ) provided. Saturday evening meal (spitroast) and Sunday lunch (BBQ) are also included in the entry fee.

For more info, visit them online.
