Furniture Builder of the Month

Stover Amish Furniture

This month's furniture builder is a small company located in Delaware, which is the fastest growing county in Ohio. This is the home of the Perkins Observatory, one of the oldest in the nation, and also the Columbus Zoo. Stover Amish Furniture employs Amish craftsmen "working in the old ways". The company offers Amish furniture in hickory, pine, cherry and oak - all traditionally hand-crafted. Pieces are available unfinished and also in a variety of stains and colors.

What's noteworthy about the company is the way they do business. They use a Web site to advertise and showcase their work, small local manufacturers to handcraft the product, and several different shipping programs to deliver low-priced, well-built, attractive and reliable furniture to all corners of the nation.
We learned about Stover Amish Furniture when John Stover contacted us and requested a link from Woodezine (which we couldn't do as we don't have a Links page). We also learned that John ships furniture all over the country, using UPS and the Post Office. They also send pieces via PACK Ship USA which is a local company with branches in Ohio and Indiana which will pick up a package anywhere in the U.S. and drop it somewhere else (handy guys for furniture builders to know!).

The furniture is delivered in a regular semi, or it can be sent under a program called "Inside Delivery with Set Up" where two men will carry the piece to the room requested and set up the furniture (assemble beds, place hutch tops on hutch bases, etc.). Rates differ for the different services. Shopping on John's Web site is surprising as his prices are extraordinarily low for custom or semi-custom furniture. Customers benefit from his direct relationship with the manufacturers, which eliminates several layers of markups.

Orders usually ship in a couple of weeks or less.and come with a warranty - customers can return any item for any reason for a refund within 10 days of receipt. Returns must be in salable condition, with all the original materials and packing there's a restocking fee.

John provides hickory porch furniture, traditional Adirondack chairs and several pine pieces that are distinctly colonial in flavor like the gun cabinet below right. The following gallery is a brief look at his catalog, and you can see more by visiting his Web site at the address given at the bottom of the page.
