Carver of the Month

David James Calvo

Even a casual glance at the collage of his work shown at left reveals that David Calvo, who owns and operates a studio on East Main Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts, has trained with some of the finest woodcarvers and sculptors in Europe.

David studied under the late Frederick Brunner, who was trained in the German woodcarving apprenticeship system. David also trained at the renowned Boston studio of Arcangelo Cascieri and Adio di Biccari, where he assisted both principals. In addition to his artistic skills, David has extensive training in high-end custom furniture design and fabrication, making him a well-rounded artist and craftsman. He has been a featured master woodcarver at several international woodworking trade shows, and a featured guest on PBS's The Woodwright's Shop with Roy Underhill and The American Woodshop with Scott Phillips.

David teaches woodcarving at some of the most prestigious schools in the U.S. and his articles have appeared in numerous national publications. He is a sought-after teacher because his unique training is a rarity.

In addition to his formal training, David traveled through Europe and Mexico exploring artistic woodcarving and sculptural designs in different cultures. Today, he designs in many styles, from classical European lines to abstract thought-provoking metaphors. With twenty-six years of professional experience and a national clientele, David's studio now includes a staff of artists who continue to provide design skills and produce high-end custom woodcarving and custom cast bronze work that reflects his mature and educated vision.

Calvo's studio designs in both contemporary and classical styles and produces carved wooden architectural ornament, carved furniture ornament, elegant hand carved lettering for dedication or commemorative panels, bronze dedication panels reminiscent of the European traditions, and figurative or abstract sculpture in wood, bronze or mixed medias. They custom design a unique product to suit the client''s need and take pride in impeccable artistic penmanship of the highest caliber.

Classes with David

At his school in Massachusetts, David runs intensive wood carving classes, workshops and seminars for beginning and intermediate students. His teaching style, learned from European instructors, trains "both of your hands to carve and your eyes to see, so that you can map your way into a project".

All three and five-day classes run from 9AM to 6PM. Pre-registration is required. Gloucester is a tourism destination, so there are plenty of local accomodations.

The Calvo Studio also offers a structured, certified Wood Carving Program. And a one-on-one concentrated apprenticeship program is available for the dedicated wood carving student. Contact David directly for more information on these programs.

Classes this fall are shown in the box at left. Contact the studio for more information on upcoming classes.
