Way to Go, Joe!
Our old friend Joe Flikkema, a superb furniture builder from upstate NY, has just finished the Cuban mahogany desk shown at right. The inset photo shows a detail of the drawer and leg joint. He also is working on a rocking chair, along with a sofa commission and a piece for the Western Design Conference which will be held in Cody, Wyoming in late September.

If you'd like to contact Joe, send him an e-mail.

Furniture Quick Fix
Ben Staerck from Zenith Promotions in the U.K. sent us a small package last week containing one of his Repair King furniture repair kits. It's essentially just four blocks of different colored wax-like putty and a plastic applicator. Instructions are on the back. We tried it out on a few scratches around the place and were very pleasantly surprised by the results. We learned quickly to heed the advice on the package and use the lightest color first, then work into the darker ones. The kit is pretty inexpensive and would be very handy for anybody involved in any kind of furniture sales or repairs to have in their toolbox.

Industrial Design Award for Hitachi
Hitachi's DS18DMR cordless drill with a built-in light has been awarded a 2005 IDEA Award for design excellence. Their new "inspire" design has been recognized by IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America) and Business Week magazine for "addressing ergonomic and safety issues, while adding additional functionality and a new aesthetic to the power tool industry". We thought it was a bright idea, too.
