Carver of the Month

Fred
Schlatter

Fred can use a pencil just as effectively as a chisel. He's a graphic designer who can execute projects in wood and metal. Educated as a fine artist and sculptor, he now does something very unique. He makes carved wooden signs and architectural fine art wood carvings.

Fred's work, acclaimed both here in the U.S. and abroad, is hand sculpted and often combined with wrought ironwork. He has been doing this for over twenty-five years and his work has been featured in numerous national publications including Good Housekeeping's Country Living, Sunset magazine, National Motorist and SignCraft magazine. Finely carved wood signs make up the bulk of his commissions, but he has also been privately commissioned to produce other carved architectural items such as doors, sculptures, figureheads, name boards and transoms for private and corporate yachts.

Fred says that, "due to their visual appeal, carved wood signs are well worth their cost for high profile projects. This could be especially true for businesses attracting upscale consumers and tourists. Likewise, for private residences or professional offices, a commissioned door or carved wall piece can personalize a space for its occupant."

His carved wood signs are ideal for visitor centers, gourmet restaurants, fine book vendors, bed and breakfast inns, premiere real estate offices, set designs, and architectural restoration projects.

Three-dimensional signs alone attract attention, but when Fred adds hand carved lettering, logos and images, they really stand out. people remember that sculpted look. "A hand-carved sign," he says, "makes a statement about the integrity of the business it represents. It is solid and three-dimensional, the carved graphics cast tangible shadows and the sculpted calligraphy gleams with brilliant 23k gold."

Fred also does house numbers, cottage and retreat names and other custom work.

On his Web site, he has a beautifully illustrated sequence of the work that goes into creating a hand-carved sign (and it sure is work!) He also has a fully photographed sequence describing the creating of the mermaid figurehead shown at right. This is an actual maritime figurehead, ready for whatever the weather can throw at it, and mounted on the bow of a sea-going yacht.

The personalised look of his signs offers a superior return on investment, especially in the tourism industry and upscale business markets. The look is so successful that many communities and business districts have opted to replace their traditional signs with handcrafted custom signage.
