I built one of these several years ago to dry small green turning blanks, but we lost it during a move. (I think my wife took it for a rabbit cage and tossed it!) Can't remember where the idea came from, but I'm sure it wasn't mine. The concept is simple enough - a small greenhouse with a tray full of shavings to absorb moisture, and a Plexiglas (TM) front that permits heat/light to flood the space inside. The wire mesh keeps the turning blank from resting in the shavings For turners in more humid areas, this might speed up the drying process. If you have a hint you'd like to share with fellow turners or carvers, please send me an e-mail. |

Professional Turning Tools Woodcraft has just introduced ten new Pinnacle pro quality turning tools made from high speed steel. Included are spindle gouges, a roughing gouge, bowl gouges, a square nose scraper and a parting tool. The blades are 62-64 on the Rockwell hardness scale (which is perfect - not too brittle, but they'll hold an edge up to six times as long as carbon steel). The long handles are a full 16", with brass ferrules. You can buy one tool ($19.99 - $44.99), or in sets of five ($124.99, item 145913) or eight ($209.99, item 145914) tools. Help turn pens for US troops overseas! The Freedom Pens Project is a volunteer effort originally spearheaded by the members of the SawMill Creek Woodworkers Forums. The goal is to provide custom hand-crafted pens to American service men and women overseas. If you are willing to donate your time, talent or services, you can get involved in the project by contacting the organization (see below), or by heading to your local Woodcraft store on November 11th. You can assist in providing beautiful writing instruments for our military stationed in foreign countries! Woodcraft stores are also serving as drop off points for pens that are being made outside of the stores. If you don't live near a Woodcraft store, please contact the project directly at http://www.freedompens.org |
