Woodworking news and new products

Milwaukee® Updates the Hole Saw

Milwaukee Tool has been providing woodworkers and other tradespeople with innovative solutions since 1924. The company's latest clever idea is to update its lineup of hole saws with a new slot form (as in, the hole arrangement shown here in the sidewalls) on all of its bi-metal, carbide tooth and diamond cutting tools. All Hole Dozer™ accessories will now come equipped with the updated slot form, which the designers are calling an all-access slot pattern. With the increased access thus provided, users will enjoy more pilot bit visibility for accurate hole placement, and they will also benefit from increased chip ejection for cooler, faster cuts. It should be a lot easier to remove the disc after cutting in plywood or solid wood. The company says that the new slot form increases productivity, which results in less downtime between holes. The updated Hole Dozer™ accessories will start to hit stores in December 2019.

Woodworking Chisels & Vintage Mallet Set from Garrett Wade

Woodworking Chisels & Vintage Mallet Set

A new hand tool set from Garrett Wade has the four chisel sizes that woodworkers almost always reach for - ¼, ½, ¾, and 1", plus a mallet and a roll. The chisels' wooden ash handles are a traditional, comfortable shape, and plastic tip guards are included. Their overall length is 9" and their Rc (Rockwell) hardness is a desirable 57-59. The set comes in a protective denim roll a ($13.50 value). The company has added a beautiful, French-made, solid ash vintage mallet (a $25 value). These 50-year-old mallets were found in a warehouse of a long-time Garrett Wade supplier, and they're in very limited quantities. Made during the heyday of hand-tool manufacturing from tight grained wood, they are so well assembled that the head and handle joint is as solid as rock. The mallets are in new condition, and their round heads are 2½" diameter, with an overall length of 10-½". Item 63A04.70 includes the chisels, roll and mallet for $87.50.

Veritas Small Crosscut Saws

Woodworkers use a crosscut saw when cutting across or perpendicular to grain, such as in tenon shoulders. These new crosscut saws (choose either 16 or 22 teeth per inch) from Veritas are an innovative blend of tradition and technology, incorporating the critical characteristics of a classic fine joinery saw but made using modern production processes and state-of-the-art materials. The saw spine is an advanced material, incorporating stainless-steel powder for weight, glass fiber for stiffness, and a polymer resin binder. The over-molded blade and stainless-steel handle bolt create a solid blade-spine-mount assembly. A single brass fastener secures the hardwood handle. Each blade is 9-1/4" long and 0.020" thick, with a cut depth of about 1-9/16". The teeth are set at 0.003" per side and are filed with a 15° rake and a 60° included angle. They also have alternating 15° bevels that act as small knives to sever wood fibers.

The RIDGID® StrutSlayr™ delivers fab shop quality, burr-free strut channel cuts

Working with Metal Studs?

Carpenters who are spending a lot of their days working with metal studs will like the new Ridgid StrutSlayr™. It delivers fabrication shop quality and burr-free strut channel cuts on the jobsite, in 5 seconds or less. Compatible with the company's 32kN press tools, the StrutSlayr offers minimal sparking as opposed to using grinders and/or chop saws. It makes a clean, consistent cut with a simple pull of a trigger. This is a tool that fits on a tool. The press tool is more familiar to plumbers - it looks a bit like a drill but it has a pair of jaws that can tighten fittings on pipe. Ridgid says the new StrutSlayr is "the only mobile dedicated strut tool on the market". Suppliers such as Ohio Power Tool stock a wide range of Ridgid press tools, and Ohio listed the StrutSlayr online in late November for $849.30

Seven New Tool Kits

Ryobi Tools has introduced several new ways to buy a collection of One+ tools and an 18 Volt battery system. Priced for homeowners, the tools generally get pretty good reviews from pros, too. The new kits range from a single drill with a battery and charger (item P215K) for $69, to the collection shown at right (P1819). It includes a drill/driver, an impact driver, a reciprocating saw, a circular saw, a multi-tool, a work light that has an ergonomic design and 160 Lumens of light output, one 1.5 Ah Battery and one 4.0 Ah Battery, an 18-Volt charger and a handy carry bag. Available at The Home Depot, the kit retails for $229.

Maksiwa Cbc Flex Countour Edgebander

Inexpensive Countour Edgebander

Woodworker's Supply now carries the new Maksiwa Cbc Flex Countour edgebander, which is essentially an affordable hot melt system for small shops and portable jobsite use. Listed in late November at $1,798.99 (item 176816DV regularly $2,099), it is described as "perfect for bonding edge tapes to curved pieces". It works on straight, concave and convex arcs, and accepts tapes from 0.3 mm (1/64") to 1 mm (5/16") thick. The tool is portable and weighs only 21.1 lbs, making it easy to carry to an install and do shelf edges onsite. The recommended glue is low temperature hot-melt pellet. It has a digital temperature control and adjustable feeder speed, which allows the operator to choose the best speed for the results. Maksiwa, which is located in Pompano Beach, Florida, makes five edgebanders ranging from this unit to the 3-phase CBC.RDPR.

Fanuc America opens new robotics and automation facility

New Robotics & Automation Facility

Robots are entering mainstream woodworking in unprecented numbers, especially so since the emergence of collaborative (cobot) models. These are designed to work safely with, and around humans. Exploring robotics in the woodshop just got a bit easier with the opening of Fanuc America's new 461,000 square-foot North Campus robotics and automation facility in Auburn Hills, Michigan. At the grand opening last month, the company featured more than twenty robot demonstrations, from its smallest M-1iA delta robot to the mighty M-2000iA, the world’s strongest robot which is able to lift 2.3 tons. There were also a variety of hands-on cobot demonstrations that highlight easy setup and programming, and demos of real-world robotic solutions for assembly, material handling, packaging, palletizing, painting and welding. Most of the solutions included Fanuc intelligence such as integrated iRVision that gives the robots a sense of sight.

A Guide to Installing Hardware

Last month, True Position Tools uploaded a new article to its website blog entitled "How to assure you get cabinet hardware installation right, the first time". One of the worst woodshop experiences is when the cabinets and doors are all ready and finished, and somebody drills holes for handles or pulls in the wrong locations. Or drills them crooked. True Position Tools has decades of experience and has done a lot of research and development into a line of cabinet hardware jigs that help woodworkers avoid that problem, and it has made constant improvements to its jigs along the way. The company offers products that are made in the USA, machined with precision and crafted from the finest materials, so they will last for years. One of the trends in kitchens nowadays is long handles, and TPT has created a jig that centers pulls that are up to 38" long. The company also makes a jig for wiring puck lights that WoodEzine found fresh enough to feature in our 2019 AWFS report.

Woodshops May Find Inspiration at KBIS

The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) is North America's largest trade show that's dedicated specifically to aspects of kitchen and bath design. In 2020, it takes place at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which is an easy and relatively inexpensive destination for woodshop owners. The show organizers say that "the expansive show floor is filled with the freshest designs from over 600 leading brands, and it's a one-stop experience that provides attendees and exhibitors the ultimate destination to network, exchange ideas and build their businesses". Woodshops that build custom cabinets or bath casework will find all the latest products and technologies on display, and they'll be able to compare products side-by-side and get answers straight from the manufacturers. Plus, it's a great venue for making business connections.

IMA Schelling to built new warehouse in Germany

A New Warehouse in Germany

IMA Schelling offers customized industrial engineering, manufacturing and machinery sales to U.S. woodshops. The company has offices in Raleigh, North Carolina (shown at left), and it is now expanding its logistics capacity back in Germany. It is building a new central warehouse at the main headquarters in Lübbecke. The new 43,000 square-foot building will have enough capacity for about 5,000 pallets and 16 lifts. Demolition of the old IMA Schelling administration building on Langekamp Street began in mid-October to make room for the construction of the new building. Installation is scheduled to begin in March 2020, and the new logistics center is scheduled to be completed by August 2020. IMA Schelling Group has a US office located in Morrisville, NC, that provides sales, training, service and parts for the American market.

Invest in Machines Before Year's End

Martin's Woodworking Machinery in Dundee, New York (it's up by Rochester and Syracuse, near the lake) reminds woodshop owners that the IRS Section 179 tax deduction applies to machines put in service. If a woodworker has had a good year, he/she can reinvest some profits in equipment before the end of the year to take advantage of the deduction (check with your accountant!). There are limits to how much a shop can spend and fully deduct in the same year, but they're quite high. Martin's, which deals in both new and used machines, currently has several machines on sale including the laguna Pro 37" wide belt sander, the NT brand 24" single surface planer (model 24-15HCVSXL, which has a helical head), Powermatic's 719T moryiser, the Laguna 18lbx bandsaw, Axiom's Pro+ 24" x 36" small shop CNC, and a Bridgewood BW-225PH double surface planer with a 25" capacity.

More layoffs at Roseburg Forest Products in Dillard, OR

More Layoffs at Oregon Plywood Plant

On November 15th, Roseburg Forest Products announced indefinite layoffs at its Dillard Plywood plant, due to continued unfavorable conditions in the North American plywood market. Nearly all affected employees received immediate job offers at other Roseburg facilities. The company has pledged to work with all those affected, with the goal of placing them as soon as possible. An earlier round of layoffs occurred at the Dillard Plywood plant in August, also due to unfavorable conditions in the domestic plywood market. Nearly every affected employee who wished to continue working for Roseburg has been placed at another Roseburg facility since the earlier announcement. The company was founded in 1936, is privately owned and is one of North America’s leading producers of particleboard, MDF and thermally fused laminates.

Inexpensive CNC Upgrade

Carbide 3D offers several desktop machines at very affordable prices. The company's heavy duty Z/X or HDZ (at left in image) is precision milled and designed specifically for the Shapeoko 3 (top right), and replaces the existing Linear Z and X carriage. The color of this accessory has just changed to gray. It is a significant upgrade that delivers superior rigidity, EZTram (a quick way to tram a router) and zero loss of Z height during milling and power cycles. Designed around a ball screw and linear rails, it will allow the Z to glide up and down with ease, even with a weighty spindle. The manufacturer says that the HDZ is not designed for everyday users, but rather for professional users who push their machines to the limit. For most owners, it’s overkill. Woodworkers who are reading this before december 1st, 2019 arestill in time to take advantage of the company's Black Friday sale.

AlphaCAM 2020.1

New AlphaCam, Cabinet Vision Releases

The latest release of AlphaCam CAD/CAM software speeds up how jobs that require several processes are managed. A new job type has been introduced in the 2020.1 release, called Multiple Process Jobs. It makes it simpler to create jobs and orders in the Automation Manager for jobs that need to be output to more than one machine, or that require secondary processing at the same machine. "In the past," says product manager Chip Martin, "users had to create multiple jobs to process complex operations. Now, a single job can be created, containing all the different machines and manufacturing processes that the part goes through." Hexagon has also released Cabinet Vision 12, which delivers greater control and flexibility for the machining of part connections, and lets users better automate and manage every aspect of production.

Laguna’s REVO 12|16

Laguna's 12/16 Revo Reviews

According to Benny Helshoj at Laguna Tools, the company's Revo 12/16 is "probably the best 12-inch midi lathe ever designed". We're starting to see independent reviews now based on a few months of use, and they seem to agree. On the Woodcraft site we found "I am nothing but impressed", and "it's perfect for beginners, but has all the power you will need as you learn and go pro". And on the Rockler site, a user said "the motor control system puts this lathe in a league of its own". Paul Mayer at ToolMetrix has uploaded a very informative video on YouTube™ that goes through the lathe's features in detail.

A Very Compact Circular Saw

A new and inexpensive ($59.99) corded (household current) compact saw from Charlotte, North Carolina based Worx takes a 4-1/2" blade, and it's getting some very positive reviews. Available in either white or black, it features an internal, galvanized, M6 threaded bolt with a helical insert nut that can be used in solid or sheet goods such as particleboard, HPL, or phenolic resin. The insert may also be used as a through-connection on shared partitions.

Acrylic Table & Vanity Legs

Osborne Wood Products' new line of acrylic legs are either completely or primarily made from clear acrylic, giving the illusion of weightless, floating furniture. Among them are simple cabinet and furniture feet in spheres and cubes, available as singles or as in a set of four. There are also conical feet, as well as a turned acrylic foot, the DeSoto. The true show-stoppers of the collection, however, are the Caledonia legs, all of which pair a traditional, turned style similar to Osborne’s collection of wooden legs with acrylic, a very contemporary material. Their clear, turned base has a solid wood top block to better conceal inner hardware and blend in. The Caledonia style is available in Island, Dining, Coffee, and End table heights. Osborne offers a custom skirt kit option to match the acrylic legs. Osborne is also offering the Solaris Acrylic Center, a small, weight-bearing, decorative piece that can be added to a table leg to achieve a clean, contemporary look.
