Upgraded Drawer Slides

A heavy-duty drawer slide from Accuride® International is being used in the Boreas XT. That's a 300-cubic-foot camper that comes pull-outs for the sink, stove and fridge/freezer. Each sits on drawer slides that must be able to carry hundreds of pounds, lock in place securely, and withstand vibration over rough terrain. Accuride’s recently-upgraded 9308 Heavy-Duty Lock-In & Lock-Out slides stand up to the rigors of off-roading and support up to 600 pounds, unlock with just one push of a tab, and have a feature that keeps an accessory securely closed or open. The trailer manufacturer, Into The Wild Overland, is located in Arvada, Colorado.

What's A Polissoir?

A new hand tool offered by Lie Nielsen Toolworks Inc. in Warren, Maine is a rush or reed burnisher that is used to hand burnish wood, with or without wax, to achieve a low luster natural wood finish. It's hand made in the mountains of North Carolina to specs that were developed by Don Williams (a professional finisher with forty years of experience), and here's his YouTube video on it. The Lie Nielsen version is a modern take on the polissoirs used by famed Paris furniture and cabinet builder Andre Roubo (1739–1791), who included the advantages of using a polissoir in his multi-volume treatise L'Art du Menuisier. Roubo cited its ability to smooth wood while extending the wax into creases where polishes cannot go. Williams says it serves as both a smoother and a grain filling tool for wood with open pores. It's also a good way to get a little exercise...

Tommy Mac and Rough Cut

In an unfortunate turn of events, woodworking show host Tommy Mac (Tom McDonald) has found it necessary to file a lawsuit against WGBH for what he believes is trademark infringement. The suit revolves around the show Rough Cut, which he hosted for seven seasons. According to a story in The Boston Globe on April 27th, "After not renewing his contract, WGBH partnered with Fine Woodworking magazine and changed the name of the show to Rough Cut with Fine Woodworking. In a lawsuit filed last week in federal court in Boston, MacDonald alleges that WGBH pirated his name and image to produce a counterfeit show. WGBH disagrees and says it owns all the trademarks related to the series." Fans need not despair - McDonald is moving forward on his own website, where he has announced that he is putting together a new series of instructional videos, and he has posted a sneak peak...

Impact Driver

Bosch Power Tools has introduced a new impact driver that will be especially interesting to deck builders and framing carpenters. The GDX18V-1600 is an 18 Volt cordless tool that switches quickly and seamlessly from a ¼" quick-change hex shank (screwdrivers, pilot bits, etc.) to ½" square drive (sockets). It delivers up to 1,600 inch pounds of max torque, pairing a powerful motor with Bosch's hammer-and-anvil system to deliver 0-3,600 bpm (blasts per minute). The four-pole, carbon-brush motor not only makes the tool powerful, but also delivers very efficient battery usage. The tool without the battery is only 2.7 lbs, and has a head-mounted LED light built in. With this driver, a woodworker needs to haul one less tool to the jobsite. It features Bosch's exclusive Electronic Cell Protection (ECP), which protects the battery against overload, overheating and deep discharge for longer life, and Bosch's Electronic Motor Protection (EMP) that protects the motor against overload with integrated temperature management.

New Cups Now Availables

Better Vacuum Cups Inc. in Chino, California, is home to the familiar green vacuum cups, all of which are made in the USA. The company has just completed testing on a new family of cups, and BVC reports the good news that they really suck (their words). Woodshop owners can click here to see a YouTube video of the cups in action on a Biesse CNC router. (There's an all new 1" cup for the Biesse Rover ATS.) The company now has cups in stock for the 74mm height, and orders received by May 4th will receive a 10% discount. Woodshops must call in the order to 877 - eight seven two - 2821to take advantage of the sale pricing. Cups will also be available soon in the flat table series - 74mm tall, for all grid tables. Better Vacuum Cups Inc. was founded by Mike McClaran, whose father and grandfather owned the first CR Onsrud dealership on the West Coast. Mike opened his own company servicing Biesse machinery in January 2005.

One Sheet Of Plywood Challenge

Get busy! The deadline for the Rockler Plywood Challenge is May 31st. The company, in partnership with The Modern Maker Podcast, is asking social media savvy woodworkers to make something using one sheet of plywood, any type, and then post it on Instagram (using the hashtag #RocklerPlywoodChallenge). Entries are eligible to win a $500 Rockler gift card, a Rockler Miter Fold dado set, or a Rockler Material Mate panel and cart shop stand. A few of Rockler’s key content partners will be judging the entries, and they have already completed some projects so that people will be inspired to enter the challenge. One is shown at left - a DIY portable folding desk by Modern Builds. The company also says makers can build their YouTube audience by making a video and posting it to YouTube using the same hashtag.

Woodworking Jokes Book from WoodEzine

The editors at WoodEzine have compiled a collection of more than two hundred woodshop and carpentry related jokes in a new paperback book. This is the first volume in what will hopefully be an annual release. The jokes are wholesome, often corny, mostly old and very clean. It's a great gift idea for someone who can't think of anything else to get the woodworker in their life - not necessarily because it's funny, but just because it's a whole lot cheaper than tools. (Okay, it's pretty funny, too.) As of April 27th it can be ordered on Amazon, and will soon be available on several of the major woodworking websites. It is 6" x 9", 120 pages, released through the BHSW (WoodEzine's parent company) Pronghorn Publishing imprint, has a cover price of $14.99, and the ISBN number is 978-0-9997819-0-6.

A Bandsaw Resaw Helper

The new GuidePRO bandsaw guide comes from Bow Products, the creators of the impressive FeatherPRO featherboards. This newest accessory is an easy-to-install guide that offers users a hands-free solution to getting the best performance from a bandsaw. In three simple steps, the user can gain a smoother infeed, ensure consistent pressure, reduce vibration, and deliver the perfect cut every time. The jig applies consistent pressure along the leading edge of the workpiece, ensuring even contact between the work and the saw fence for a truly square cut. It has a detachable base and a 6" silicone feather that dampens vibration. Woodworkers can add an optional 4" extension to achieve a full 10"of coverage. Plus, there's a measuring tool and a square incorporated in the base. The GuidePRO will begin shipping in May, and woodworkers can place orders now.

Top Knobs

In line with kitchen trends, New Jersey based Top Knobs has expanded its Honey Bronze and Ash Gray finishes to seventeen cabinet hardware series, in five collections. The popular finishes are now available in 113 cabinet pulls, knobs, latches, back plates and appliance pulls. They were originally introduced alongside the Devon Collection in 2017. Honey Bronze puts a chic twist on classic bronze and brass finishes with a softer, light golden tone. The stunning shade adds the perfect touch of old-world charm to kitchen and bath designs. And Ash Gray brings a warm feeling to designs with its low-reflecting shine. Top Knobs offers an exclusive lifetime warranty for the original purchaser.

A Wider Range Of Blades

Tenryu America, Inc., with offices in Hebron, Kentucky, has expanded its Silencer line of circular saw blades to include a full range of tooth counts with the same features as the popular originals. Those features include a unique ATAF shear face grind for faster cuts and longer life; a dampened laser cut plate for less vibration and sound; silencer slots; and a new vibration dampening system that includes resin filled laser cut body slots. The company is also known for meticulous, hand hammered plate tensioning, for a flatter blade and truer cuts. The Silencer line is designed for sliding compound miter saws, conventional miter saws, and crosscutting on the jobsite with portable saws. Blade diameters run from 6-1/2", 7-1/2" and 8-1/2" to 10" and 12", and the company makes a signature all purpose blade to fit Festool's Kapex. That blade, the SL-26072, has a 260mm diameter, 72 teeth, a 30mm arbor hole, an ATAF grind, a 0.110" kerf and a 10 rake. Tenryu makes over 3,000 types of carbide blades.

Milling Plastics On Your CNC?

For woodshops that find themselves machining fiber-reinforced plastics, Leuco now offers a specially adapted milling cutter. The p-System shank-type cutter is DP-tipped and has a shear angle of more than 55 degrees. It is available in diameters from 6.0 mm up, and can be customized according to the application. Due to its high shear angle, delamination at the top and bottom edges, plus edge breakouts, burrs and fraying of single fibers or fiber bundles are all prevented. Even when milling tough aramid fibers in AFRP, good cutting qualities can be achieved without fiber projections. The p-System primarily produces coarse chips rather than fine dust, so waste extraction is optimum. Used as a compression cutter, the tool can generate perfect outer and inner contours, or dividing cuts. Or as a grooving cutter, it is ideal for incremental scarfing and for generating functional surfaces, pockets and grooves.

New Screw Gun

A new gun from Ryobi Power Tools is part of the company's One+ cordless family. The 18-Volt brushless screw gun (model # P225) is built for production - it will drive 3,000 screws per charge. It has variable speeds with a lock-on feature, and delivers up to 4700 RPM. There's an adjustable and removable nose cone, and a heavy-duty clutch. The QuietDrive feature automatically starts the motor on contact, providing less noise and more battery conservation. The tool includes an LED light to illuminate the work area, and it actually stays on after the triggered is released. There's a belt clip on the top of the tool, and another removable clip that mounts to either side of the tool for convenience. The handle is Gripzone overa mold, with micro-texture for optimum grip and user comfort. The tool only (no battery) sells for $99 through The Home Depot.

Octagonal Accents

Vesta Fine Hardware is located in Branchburg, New Jersey. The company has just launched its new Palazzo Collection, which it describes as "refined, rich and eternally romantic". The collection has octagonal elements, and is available in nine cabinet pull and knob shapes. Composed of solid brass, it is offered in eight finishes: Brushed Satin Nickel, Milano Bronze, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Polished Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Brass, Satin Copper, and Unlacquered Brass. Each piece is complete with a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser. Vesta is known for fine European design, quality craftsmanship and style in the finest solid brass materials, hand-picked stone and hand polished finishes.

Cut Really Large Holes

Big Horn Corporation, located in Vista, California, has introduced a new set of adjustable hole saw replacement blades for several of its large hole saws. The new multipurpose blades will cut plywood, laminates, composite boards, gypsum board, plastic, drywall, rubber and many other materials. They are high quality and will make smooth, accurate cuts. Available in a two-pack, they are compatible with the company's 19238 Adjustable Hole Saw (shown) that handles a range of diameters from ranging from 1-1/2" to 7-7/8" (40mm - 200mm). The new blades will also fit three other models, with a couple that cut up to 11-3/4". The new two-pack includes extra brad point drill bit for drilling in thin sheet materials, plus an Allen wrench for adjustments.

2018 Wood Diamond Awards - Entries Sought

The Cabinet Makers Association (CMA) is now accepting submissions for its 2018 contest. Last year's winner (shown at right) was The Artisan Shop in Loveland, Colorado. The program's overarching goal is to promote excellence in woodworking, and members who win awards are also able to use their achievement in local marketing programs. CMA is asking all current members to consider a recent project that they are especially proud of, to enter for a chance to win a 2018 Wood Diamond Award. More than one project may be submitted. The deadline is May 15th and winners will be announced on August 24th during IWF in Atlanta. If you're not yet a CMA member, there's still time to join ($275 a year). The Association was incorporated in 1998 by a group of custom cabinet makers who thought that small to mid-size shops needed to network and help each other grow profitably. Most shops have 20 or fewer employees, with the vast majority being 1-5 person shops.

Two-Stage Handheld Jobsite Vac

There’s a new option for lightweight, convenient jobsite cleanup. The GAS18V-02 18V cordless hand-held vacuum from Bosch Power Tools is a mini two-stage collector. It uses two-stage rotational airflow technology to capture both large and fine particles. The first stage captures 90 percent of debris, while the second stage removes finer particles from the airflow to help keep the HEPA filter clog-free for longer. Weighing just 2.9 lbs, the tool has a relatively long runtime (seven minutes per battery amp hour), and its powerful motor provides up to 21.2 CFM of airflow. It comes with a slew of attachments that can transform it into a handy upright vacuum, thanks to extension pipes and a floor nozzle. The filter is washable, and the bagless dust cup is easy to empty and has a transparent shell, so users can check the fill level at any time. It holds up to 61 cubic inches of debris. Compatible with all Bosch 18V batteries, this tool will be available this summer.

Cordless Sander

The cordless 20 Volt, 5" x 8-hole hook and loop, random orbit sander from Porter-Cable (model PCCW205B) has been on the market for a couple of months now, and the reviews are quite positive. This lightweight sander, part of the 20V Max system, can be attached to a 1-1/4 in. hose (the company also makes a cordless shop vacuum that size), or a woodworker can use the included detachable dust bag. It orbits 3/32" and runs at 12,000 orbits per minute (OPM), so it's cabable of handling most onsite jobs. It has a dust-proof switch and the tool (without the battery) weighs just 2.8 lbs. It has a low profile for more control, and an ergonomical, rubber grip for comfort. WoodEzine found it (tool only) at Lowe's for $59.97.

New Powder-Coated Door Style Added

Integra Doors, located in Greer, South Carolina, makes powder coated custom cabinet doors. The company has announced a new addition to the catalog, which is named Mission Plus. This door joins their similar, but less detailed Mission Bead and Mission 45 door styles. The added detailing on the new door style is subtle, but owner Bern Fitzgerald says that "customers love the bit of elegance that it adds". This MDF door can be powder coated in one of Integra Doors five stock colors, or almost any custom color a client desires. Integra says its powder coated doors don't delaminate, have no unsightly cracks, no yellowing and no bacteria-laden seams. A powder coated kitchen means no more VOCs or HAPs are being emitted, and no glues or solvents are used in the coating of these doors.

CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) Wheels

Lee Valley & Veritas are now carrying highly durable, diamond-like, CBN sharpening wheels that never need truing. Each is made of cast steel, precisely machined for accurate size and flatness, and electroplated with CBN particles that are almost as hard as diamond. They grind even tough steels quickly. CBN is also a much better thermal conductor than abrasives used in bonded wheels. This and the heavy steel body means the abrasive surface remains cooler, so you can grind to the tip of the tool without overheating it and spend less time honing afterwards. There are 6"(1/2" bore) and 8" (5/8" bore) wheels in 80 and 180 grits.

Shark Queen Added to Chess Set

Next Wave Automation’s celebration of the tenth anniversary of its CNC Shark desktop CNC router continues this month with the Shark Queen chess piece. The company is offering free instructions and VCarve files for making a complete commemorative chess set, and one piece is being revealed each month. Previously posted and available on the company website (at no charge) are the chess board, Lighthouse rook, Piranha pawn, Seahorse knight and Squid bishop. Each piece can be made by taking advantage of the double-sided machining available in Vectric’s new V9 Software. Founded in 2007 by president and CEO Tim Owens, Next Wave Automation is a U.S. manufacturer of affordable CNC routing equipment and automated machinery for professional woodworkers and woodworking hobbyists of all levels. The company, which is based in Perrysburg, Ohio, manufactures a full line of CNC machines for hobbyists and small wood shops ranging from the CNC Piranha to the CNC HD4 Extended.

Attractive Modular Shelving Option

The new Liberta modular system from Montreal based Richelieu Hardware is an open shelving system for both residential and commercial projects. It's based on easy-to-assemble connectors and bars that make it very simple to design and build custom shelving. The bars (called profiles) are aluminum and can be trimmed with a miter saw. The connectors are locked with a grub screw and Allen wrench. This is a very strong and durable system that can be taken apart and reassembled. Each configuration can be combined with glass shelves, decorative paneling and lighting options to give designs added versatility. An open shelving structure will look just as stunning, integrated into a beautiful rustic or contemporary residential kitchen design, while a bookshelf and table adds an industrial feel to a space.

Bosch Bits Reach An Impressive Milestone

Bosch Power Tools introduced the Daredevil™ spade bit in November 2013 and less than five years later sales have hit... 50 million! And that's just in North America, where it has been a big hit with professional users. The bit was created for electricians, plumbers and other trades who asked for greater speed, ease of use and hole quality. Since its introduction, millions of users have turned to Bosch Daredevil for a design that’s unparalleled in its performance. The bits not only save time, but help the user reduce fatigue because the bit does the work. Bosch incorporated a full-cone threaded tip that increases not only the speed of the bit, but also the ease of drilling. Another feature is the contoured paddle. This wave-like shape facilitates chip removal, which adds to the speed of the bit. The combination of these two features in independent testing showed the Daredevil Spade Bit was ten times faster and required 53 percent less force than conventional spade bits. And while spade bits are not expected to produce anything beyond average hole quality, the spur-and-reamer design is unique because it not only scores the wood for a clean entry hole, but also has angled cutting edges that cut the hole for reduced breakout. That leaves a cleaner exit hole than competitors' bits.

Recognizing Furniture Designers

John Conrad, executive director of the American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD) says that celebrity licenses receive a great deal of publicity, but the true designers behind their collections are rarely acknowledged. "The exception to this rule," he says, "is the Pinnacle Awards, which were launched some twenty-three years ago by the ASFD board of directors to promote design quality and encourage the recognition of furniture designers. We think it’s time for a change, and we are actively engaging in promoting the profession and the people in it via new tools and collaborative efforts with other industry associations". At the center of this new direction is an entirely revamped website with an improved user experience and a clean new look that positions the Pinnacle Awards center stage, and finalists and winners in the limelight. Additionally, a greatly enhanced member directory spotlights each and every ASFD member with examples of their design work, headshot, bio and contact info. Along with making it easy for manufacturers and retailers to explore new talent for design projects with a library of the industry’s best at their fingertips, the site’s members-only portal offers access to job opportunities and mentorships, and easy updates to members' online directory profiles.
