Knapp's invisible Klick connector can be used to attach moldings.

Invisible Way To Attach Moldings

Ever need a way to attach moldings without nails or woodfiller showing? Knapp, a German manufacturer that has recently entered the U.S. market, has the answer. The company makes two versions of a plastic snap-together molding. Use the special router bit to run a groove in the molding, and another in the panel or cabinet, and then the double-ended Klick connector just snaps together. Or you can just rout one part and screw one half of an sKlick connector to the surface of the other using the supplied panhead screws, and achieve the same result. This is a self-tightening connector - it sucks tighter as it is pushed together due to the dovetailed profile. It's ideal for applications such as installing wood ceilings, or trim and moldings around windows or doors (there are photos on the website). 30-piece sample packs are $10.

Fan Cabinet by New York artist Sebastian Errazuriz

Cabinets With A Life Of Their Own

Artist, designer and activist Sebastian ErraZuriz is based in New York and creates jawdropping works of art. His pieces are included in exhibits worldwide, and he has been covered extensively in the media. Of special interest to woodworkers are his cabinets, many of which move as though they have a life of their own. If you visit his website, scroll down to the bottom of the Cabinets page and have a look at the way he designed his Delta chair (just click on the image of the completed chair). The work shown at left is his Fan Cabinet, and there's a very short video on the site showing how it operates. And cabinetmakers will be startled by the way that the Grand Complication (top piece on the Cabinets page) opens from a seemingly small case into a huge piece of furniture.

New Formaldehyde Rules for MDF, Plywood

On March 22nd the EPA's new requirements covering composite wood products came into effect. They concern labeling as TSCA Title VI compliant. The affected products include hardwood plywood, medium-density fiberboard, particleboard, and all household and other finished goods containing these products. By including provisions for laminated products, product-testing requirements, labeling, recordkeeping, and import certification, the rule ensures that hardwood plywood, MDF and particleboard products sold, supplied, offered for sale, imported to, or manufactured in the United States are in compliance with the new emission standards. The rule also establishes a third-party certification program for laboratory testing and oversight of formaldehyde emissions from manufactured and/or imported composite wood products.

The WX543L is a 20 Volt jigsaw from Worx

Worx With Any 20V Power Share Battery

How often do you see a tool with a charger and battery included for $69.99? The variable speed, orbital action WX543L from Worx is a left or right-handed jigsaw that weighs only 5.3 lbs with the battery installed, but it has plenty of power and a no-load speed of 0 to 2600 strokes per minute. It takes standard T-shank jigsaw blades, with one-finger tool-free blade changing - just press a button. It comes with an adapter that clips onto the base and handles small shop vacuum hoses. There's even a finger guard in front of the blade. The jigsaw comes with a 3 year warranty, and a wood blade.

Variable Speed Detail Sander

Porter-Cable's model PCCW201B is the top pick for a 2019 detail sander on where it earned a 4.9 out of 5 score. This is a 20 Volt cordless solution for detail sanding. The unit sells on Amazon for about $55 (tool only). It's light and comfortable for all-day use, and can reach into cabinet corners, between chair rungs, and into other challenging spots with its diamond-shaped tip. It has a rubberized grip and speed control from 9,000 to 11,000 OPM (orbits per minute). The switch is sealed and dust-proof. The sander can be used with the detachable dust bag or attached to a 1-¼" shop vacuum hose for more efficiency. Included with the tool are replacement sanding tips and some sandpaper. Reviews on Amazon are 84% either four or five stars, with one user noting that the diamond tips wear out fast and that Amazon has recommended the wrong sandpaper (the holes don't line up).

New compact drill driver from DeWALT

DeWALT is Going Atomic

The DCD708B is a compact, 20 Volt MAX brushless 1/2" drill driver from DeWALT that has two speed ranges and 15 clutch settings. It is only 6.3" front to back and 2.8 lbs., but its high-performance motor delivers 340 unit watts outs (UWO). A built-in LED provides optimum illumination, plus there's a removable belt hook and a 3-year, limited warranty. This is one of six tools in DeWALT's new Atomic™ series that is optimized for tight spaces, overhead work, and long periods of use. Instant Sawhorses!

Bora Tool has introduced its new PM-4500 Speedhorse™, a contractor-grade sawhorse that sets up a whole lot faster than conventional sawhorses. Simply release the legs and get to work. Installers and cabinet assemblers will appreciate how easy it is to set up, take down, and transport. Key features include the quick deploy and quick collapse legs; impressive speed - both setup and teardown take mere seconds; best-in-class weight capacity - each individual unit can support 1500 lbs; and non-sequential leg folding. To tear down your worksite, just pull the levers on each end and fold the legs up. It doesn’t matter which order. There's also a longer, pre-drilled top, which means more workspace and stability. The pre-drilled metal top allows you to screw in a 2x4 as a sacrificial top, and you can pop in longer 2x4s at the ends to make a bvase for a plywood platform.

On casters for mobility, it also has a large drain for emptying water. Free Plans for a Toolchest

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has added five new products to its modular Lock-Align Drawer Organizer System. According to the company, the new high output batteries provide 50% more power, run 50% cooler, and offer increased run-time over standard M18 batteries, and are compatible with the entire system of more than 175 tools. They let users experience faster application speeds and fade-free power in all three segments (CP, XC, and HD) without having to invest in an entirely new system. They are supported by advanced charging capability with the new Super Charger.

A Well Connected Worklight

The new portable, cordless Bosch GLI18V-1200C is an 18V LED area light with Bluetooth®, and it gives a woodworker full control over the smart light using a mobile device. An installer can turn the floodlight on and off remotely, dim it to the desired brightness, put it on a timer and even check the battery, all from Bosch's free Toolbox app. The light can be controlled from up to 100 feet away, and the app can manage several lights at the same time. Built for the jobsite, the GLI18V features a protective roll cage and an IP64-rated cover that's resistant to dust and water damage. The 1,200 lumen floodlight provides plenty of light for large work areas, and it has a fade-in function to avoid flash blinding co-workers. It's also equipped with an 800-lumen dimmed mode for longer runtime (up to 17 hours on one of the company's CORE18V 8.0 Ah batteries, or up to 10.6 hours at full 1,200-lumen brightness). And there's a 1/4"-20 thread mount for putting it on a tripod, or a user has five set-up choices just using the built-in roll frame.

Two new router bases from MicroFence

New Bosch, Festool Bases from MicroFence

Micro Fence brings unprecedented accuracy and control to handheld routers, including guides for straightline, circular and elliptical work. The company creates custom bases for a shop's existing routers, so those tools can be updated with Micro Fence guide jigs. They have just introduced one for Bosch's new GKF12V Cordless trimmer, making it a lot easier to do laminate trimming, hinge mortising, fluting, grooving and inlay work. The factory model has no holes to mount a guide, so Micro fence designed an acrylic sub-base that works with the company's Edge Guide or Circle Jig, and provides mounting options from either side of the motor. There's also a new sub-base for the largest Festool 2200 router , so it can be equipped with MF's Ellipse and Interface Packages. The eight inch diameter was a little large for the existing Universal Router Plate.

Construction Calculator Update

Calculated Industries' new Advanced Tape feature is now available on five apps that mirror CI construction calculators (shown). The function lets a woodworker display, review, save and email inputs, descriptions and calculated values for many of the functions on the Apps. It keeps track of measurements, cut lists and other figures, and records inputs and outputs for saving as a file to archive, or to send as an attached PDF. It is available for the Construction Master Pro (CMP), Construction Master 5, Pipe Trades Pro, Qualifier Plus IIIx and the Measure Master Pro. An example of how it can be used is on a stairs, where one can input the floor-to-floor rise and any horizontal constraints and let the CMP figure out the rest. The app provides the riser height, how many risers, tread width, number of treads, stairwell opening, the stringer length and stair angle of incline.
