New Tariffs on Chinese Casework

IWF Atlanta is reporting that major Chinese cabinet manufacturers will be assessed duties by the Commerce Department beginning April 1st, and these will average 59 percent with some as high as 269 percent. Importers of Chinese-made kitchen cabinets and vanities were already paying tariffs of 25 percent. The American Kitchen Cabinet Alliance first filed its petition against Chinese cabinet manufacturers in March 2019, documenting to the Commerce Department and U.S. International Trade Commission that Chinese producers received illegal subsidies from their government allowing them to supply cabinets at below the cost of production - a practice known as "dumping." The AKCA attorney identified a number of Chinese government programs including discounted land, electricity, raw materials, grants, discounted loans and export incentives. You can read the full story here.

Fanuc explians the four types of collaborative robot

Cobots Explained

Fanuc uploaded an article on its website in mid-March that explains the four types of collaborative robot operation. Collaborative robots (cobots) are designed to work safely with people and sense contact before it happens. The new article is handy for small to medium sized shops that are finding it hard to hire qualified people and are beginning to look at these affordable robots to perform some basic parts moving, making and assembly tasks. The options covered are power and force limiting cobots, safety rated and monitored stop cobots, speed and separation (fenceless) cobots, and hand-guiding cobots. These machines are designed to work as assistants for tasks that are too dull, dirty or dangerous for people to perform, such as picking parts all day.

New Tornado Compression Bits

Vortex Tool Company, Inc., designs and manufactures a wide variety of standard and custom high-performance router and insert cutting tools. The Schofield, Wisconsin company has introduced four new multi-flute Tornado brand compression bits with CVD coating. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a method that achieves a hard, wear-resistant coating which has a chemical and metallurgical bond to the substrate. The dimensions of the new bits are 1/2" diameter x 1" depth of cut (8 flute), 3/8" x 1" (6), 1/2" x 1-1/2" (8) and 1/4" x 7/8" (4). Vortex also provides re-tipping and sharpening services, and publishes an app that simplifies tool selection. A shop inputs the type of material being cut, the horsepower of the CNC machine, the tool diameter, the thickness of the material and the type of cut desired, and the Tool Selection Guide App will recommend the best tool. Both print and online tooling catalogs are available.

Every Shop Should Have One

New from Lee Valley are three Japanese saws - an adjustable depth Dozuki ($55 US, left), a rip-tooth Kataba ($45.50 center), and a cross-cut convex Kataba ($29.50 right). The 25 tpi adjustable model can limit the depth of a cut, and has metric and Imperial scales printed on the blade. It has a 1/64" kerf and is 21-1/4" overall with an 8-7/8" long blade. It is made in Japan by the blacksmith Master Yoshiwaka. The rip Kataba (backless saw) has a replaceable 11-13/16" long blade with a progressive tooth pitch; close to the heel of the blade, it has a finer 8.5 tpi to make starting cuts easier, whereas the toe has an aggressive 5 tpi for faster cutting. Made of 0.025" thick steel, it cuts a 0.036" kerf to reduce binding. And the 10-7/16" blade of the convex saw has 14.5 tpi. Its curved edge matches the natural arc of your arm as you saw, keeping the teeth engaged in the wood longer on each stroke.

Improved Wood Flooring Repair Kit

Titebond® has made it easier to repair wood flooring with recent improvements to its Urethane Repair Kit. Two practical updates to the two-part urethane system - the ability to use a caulk gun to extrude the adhesive and a longer injection needle - let a woodworker stand up during application. There's no longer a need to get down on your hands and knees while repairing loose or popping areas in a finished floor. The kit's adhesive also offers unique benefits over epoxy. Its low-viscosity formula improves flow to hollow spots beneath the boards, without causing dimensional changes in the flooring. It also sets quickly and is fully cured to a highly water-resistant bond within 45 minutes of application. The revamped kit is easy to use. A 1/8" bit is used to drill small holes as access points, to avoid visible defects. The adhesive is water clean-up when wet, and contains no VOCs. It will repair all types of wood flooring including engineered, solid, parquet and bamboo.

Blackwing Long Point Sharpener Mk2 - Black

A Long Point Pencil Sharpener

Those of us who use secondary bevels will understand this. Tools For Working Wood in Brooklyn, New York has started carrying the Blackwing Long Point Sharpener (Mk2). They're easy to use - stick the pencil in the first hole (intelligently labeled "1") and spin it around so it just shaves off just the wood. The sharpener bottoms out and stops cutting when enough lead has been exposed for the point. Then you switch to the second hole (again, helpfully labeled as "2") and spin the pencil to take a far finer cut. The result is a beautiful, long-lasting, long point that's ready to lay out thin, accurate lines. When the blades get dull, there are two spare blades tucked into a cavity in the back of the sharpener. The Blackwing Long Point Sharpener is listed at $9.95.
